Introducing the Steady Steps Toolbox

The Steady Steps Toolbox is a custom inclusion-focused resource commissioned by St Nicholas’ Pedagogy Team, to complement and amplify educators’ efforts to embed and incorporate inclusive learning.

The toolbox is a welcomed addition to the suite of resources that educators lean on when crafting responsive environments and educational programs to meet the diverse learning needs of the children in their care.

Within each toolbox is a selection of visual communication tools, including visual cards, boards, key word sign cards, and emotion cards that collectively promote a holistic approach to learning, wellbeing and interaction with children so they can participate fully and have a sense of belonging.

Why use visual aids

Visual aids, especially those from the Steady Steps Toolbox, can significantly enhance learning and communication for children with diverse needs and backgrounds.

Bringing these aids into the educational environment enables children to actively participate, supporting them to feel included, understood, and capable of achieving their full potential.

This can be seen in:

  • Bridging language barriers to suit diverse language proficiencies
  • Providing clarity in interpreting instructions and concepts through pictures, symbols and diagrams
  • Supporting children with specific needs or who are neurodivergent by visually depicting routines and choices
  • Reassuring decision-making by providing a sense of predictability and structure
  • Empowering children’s autonomy by building their confidence and self-esteem in completing instructions independently

Stepping into the future

Embedding this toolbox marks an exciting step forward in further elevating the inclusive educational approach within St Nicholas Early Education.
