Each year, NSS sees children across the world come together share a love of reading, tuning in to read a book together. This year’s chosen book, Luna Roo the Kangaroo Baller, is a beautiful reminder of the powerful lessons picture books can teach young children. As we gather to read, explore and play, we’re also nurturing essential early learning skills that help children grow into confident, capable and compassionate learners.
Here are three lessons from this year’s story that we are loving:
Course and Self-Belief: Learning to trust yourself
Luna Roo’s journey is a wonderful springboard for conversations about courage. In the story, Luna faces moments that feel big, new or a little bit scary – something every child can relate to. Through her determination, children can understand why it is important to:
- Build confidence when trying something new
- Develop a strong, positive sense of self
- Understand that it’s okay to make mistakes and try again
These ideas connect beautifully with our focus on emotional development and self‑regulation. When children see characters like Luna believing in themselves, they begin to believe in their own abilities too.
Teamwork and Cooperation: Growing Together
Luna doesn’t leap alone – she relies on her teammates, listens to their ideas and discovers that everyone has something valuable to contribute. For children aged 2–5, this mirrors the social learning that happens every day in our centres:
- Collaborating with peers
- Practising turn‑taking and sharing
- Recognising that everyone brings different strengths
At St Nicholas Early Education, we intentionally create environments where children learn with and from one another. NSS gives us another rich opportunity to explore these skills through storytelling, play and group discussions.
Resilience and Problem-Solving: Navigating Challenges
The story also introduces tricky opponents, unexpected obstacles and moments of doubt – all of which Luna works through with persistence. These moments help children understand:
- How to manage frustration
- How to adapt when things don’t go to plan
- That perseverance is part of learning
These are essential cognitive and problem‑solving skills that we nurture daily through play‑based learning. Stories like Luna’s help children recognise that challenges are not roadblocks but stepping stones.
Why We Celebrate NSS at St Nicholas Early Education
National Simultaneous Storytime is more than a reading event – it’s a celebration of community, imagination and the lifelong love of literacy. At St Nicholas, we believe books open doors: to language, to connection, to creativity and to understanding the world around us.
By sharing Luna Roo the Kangaroo Baller, we’re not just reading a story. We’re building confidence, strengthening friendships, encouraging resilience and fostering a deep appreciation for books.
We can’t wait to celebrate NSS 2026 with our children, families and educators and to continue championing the magic of literacy every day.
