At St Nicholas, we believe that literacy learning is a lifelong journey. Echoing the sentiment of Children’s Book Week, and with a deep understanding of the myriad of benefits that reading offers, St Nicholas has composed and compiled a selection of resources for families to utilise when creating rich and engaging literacy experiences for their children aged 0-5 at home.

Make reading a part of your daily routine

Reading stories, recipes and more provides children with new realities, perspectives and inspiration. Instill and nurture a love of reading by:

  • Incorporating reading into your daily routine.
  • Provide easy open access to books.
  • Connect with your local library to access a variety of literature.
  • Immerse children in a literacy-rich environment, both indoors and outdoors.
  • Provide a comfortable, quiet place to read together.
  • Converse with children throughout the story with open-ended questions and descriptive language.
  • Aim to read at least three books per day (which equates to over 1000 a year)!
