About the program

Secondary students can apply to participate in our Early Childhood Immersion program, which has been designed to provide secondary students with an introduction to the early childhood education and care profession. 

Participating students are engaged in a range of practical and theoretical opportunities within a fully functional playsession environment. Students are supported by one of our dedicated Early Childhood Trainer and Assessors to create an inspiring and interactive environment for children.

Our Immersion EXPERIENCE will allow students to GROW, BUILD and EXPLORE early childhood education and care as a possible career path while gaining practical and transferrable skills as they work alongside qualified educators and children in our playsession environment. 

The 3 program options are listed below, allowing your school to make a selection that will suit your students. 

 

1. Pathways Grow (4-week program)

A great introduction for students considering applying for a School-Based Traineeship (SBAT) position, or for students wondering if early childhood education and care is the right career path for them. 

Over 4 weeks (one day a week), students will: 

  • Experience an introduction to early childhood education and care, children’s development and play-based learning in a fun and interactive environment 
  • Complete a ‘Pathways Passport’ which documents their skills and achievements – perfect to take to interviews to showcase their accomplishments to prospective employers across all industries 
  • Participate in CPR training with a registered first aid facilitator – each student gains a CPR certificate, a great addition to a growing resume. 

 

2. Pathways Grow and Build (8-week program)

This program is structured to introduce students to early childhood education and care through our Pathways Grow program with the benefit of the additional 4-week Pathways Build program. This gives students 8 weeks (one day a week) of knowledge, practical experiences and skills. 

Students will: 

  • Continue to grow their skills and achievements, thus extending their Pathways Passport 
  • Participate in music and movement, language/literacy and cultural awareness workshops 
  • Use the skills they have gained to plan and implement group times for children in our playsession environment 
  • Extend their hands-on and practical skills, as well as gain an increased understanding of early childhood development 
  • Explore study and employment opportunities and expectations within the early childhood education and care profession.  
3. Pathways Portable Program (by negotiation)

Have the Immersion experience come to you! Opportunities for schools outside of the Newcastle/Maitland area to participate in our unique Pathways Portable program. Our Portable program can be customised to suit your needs, as well as the level of your student group.  

Possible inclusions:  

  • A day in the life of an educator 
  • Experiences with children, including music and movement, stories and play-based learning 
  • Embedding cultural diversity into your practice 
  • Interview preparation and strategies. 

All our Pathways programs can be customised to suit Years 9, 10, 11 and 12, as well as a variety of student levels. 

1. Comprehensive introduction to early childhood education

Students gain a thorough understanding of the early childhood education and care profession, including its importance and impact on child development.

 

2. Practical experience

Students actively engage in hands-on activities within a functional playsession environment, enhancing their skills in creating an inspiring and interactive setting for children.

 

3. Knowledge and skills development

Students develop essential knowledge and skills in areas such as effective communication, curriculum planning, behavior management, and creating a safe and inclusive learning environment.

4. Career exploration and decision-making

The program helps students explore early childhood education as a potential career path, empowering them to make informed decisions about their educational and career choices.

 

5. Confidence and personal growth

Students build self-confidence, empathy, patience, and adaptability while successfully navigating challenges and responsibilities in an early childhood education setting.

Early Childhood Immersion program
  • Students who participate in St Nicholas Pathways’ Immersion program have the opportunity to apply for a School-Based Traineeship (SBAT), Work-Based Traineeship, or enrol to study as part of our CONNEX program.

Submit a booking request for Before and After School Care or Vacation Care. One of our friendly team members will be in touch as soon as possible.

Please note:

  • Submitting a booking request or enquiry does not constitute a confirmed booking. No booking is confirmed until you have received email confirmation from St Nicholas.

  • For casual and Vacation Care bookings, we have a 5-day cancellation policy, after which the parent/carer will be liable for their full fees for that session. For permanent bookings, we have a 2-week cancellation policy.

  • One-off cancellations for permanent bookings still require the parent/carer to pay their full fees for that session, unless the cancellation is permanent, in which case the family will forfeit their permanent place for that session.
