Through a valued partnership, St Nicholas Early Education Branxton regularly connects with Rosary Park Catholic Primary School, giving preschool children opportunities to learn alongside primary students. This connection came to life during a Smoking Ceremony led by Uncle Warren Taggart – an experience that brought both communities together in a shared moment of learning and reflection.
A Powerful Cultural Experience
For many children, the Smoking Ceremony was both new and memorable. Guided by Uncle Warren, they were introduced to the significance of this important Indigenous practice, traditionally used for cleansing and creating a safe, positive space. As the smoke rose, so too did understanding. Uncle Warren shared that Country is more than land – it is a living, connected system of waterways, skies, animals and people. The children engaged with openness and curiosity, beginning to build an early appreciation of the deep cultural connections held by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
A Confident Step Towards School
This visit also marked an important milestone – the beginning of the Transition to School journey for our preschool learners. Exploring Rosary Park, meeting teachers and engaging with older students helped to transform what could feel unfamiliar into something welcoming and exciting. Experiences like this build confidence, ease anxieties and help children see themselves as capable learners ready for what comes next. Rather than simply preparing for school, they are already becoming part of the school community.
Stronger Together
The partnership between St Nicholas Early Education Branxton and Rosary Park creates opportunities that extend beyond single events. It strengthens connections between children, families, teachers and educators, forming a supportive and familiar pathway from early learning into primary school. Through shared experiences, children are not only learning about the world – they are learning how to be part of it: to listen, to respect, and to connect with others.
Continuing the Learning
Back at preschool, the experience continued to unfold. Through art, play and conversation, children reflected on what they saw and felt – sharing their thoughts about the smoke, the stories and how we can care for Country. These reflections revealed something powerful: not just growing knowledge, but empathy, respect and a genuine sense of connection.
St Nicholas Early Education Branxton extends their sincere thanks to Uncle Warren Taggart and the Rosary Park Catholic Primary School community for welcoming our Preschool learners and sharing their knowledge. Together, we are nurturing a future grounded in understanding, respect and belonging.
