Vacation Care

Looking back at Summer Vacation Care

St Nicholas OOSH Summer Vacation Care recently wrapped up across 23 services, offering primary school children a vibrant mix of experiences designed to help them rest and recharge during the school holiday period.

From water play and science experiments to creative arts and community excursions, our educators delivered programs that were more than just fun – they were thoughtfully designed to support and grow the learning and interests of our OOSHies through hands-on experiences.

Here’s what they focused on:

  • Exploration and adventure: Children embraced hands‑on activities such as bushwalks, obstacle courses and nature‑based challenges. These experiences encouraged curiosity, teamwork and problem‑solving skills that support confidence and independence as children grow through their primary years.
  • Creativity and imagination: Art, drama, construction and STEM‑inspired activities gave children opportunities to express themselves, collaborate with peers and explore new interests. These experiences help build communication skills, flexible thinking and emotional awareness – all essential for primary‑aged learners.
  • Community and belonging: Excursions, group games and shared projects helped children strengthen friendships and feel connected to their local community. Our educators intentionally fostered inclusive, supportive environments where every child felt welcome and valued.

Program Highlight

St Nicholas OOSH Rutherford engaged in a community‑focused learning experience, exploring how events like the Variety Bash can spark positive and lasting change within local communities. With their Ed Leader Steph proudly taking part in the 2026 bash later in the year alongside her Father, our OOSHies were able to go behind the scenes of preparing for the Variety Bash.

The Variety Bash is Australia’s longest running motoring event that sees participants driving decorated motor cars through the remote outback and regional areas of NSW to raise vital funds and awareness for children in need residing in these areas.

In preparation, Steph and her Father will be driving a Monsters Inc themed Bash Car and each of our OOSHies were invited to place their handprint of the car. Allowing our students to connect with this cause and impart their support. This car will visit a selection of schools along its rural NSW route that will be receiving financial and resourcing support from Variety.

In bringing this experience to St Nicholas OOSH Rutherford, Step has created an impactful experience that speaks to our shared love of learning.

“We were able to inform the children of St Nicholas Rutherford OOSH why we do what we do. For myself I do it cause I am passionate about children’s learning believing everyone should have the opportunity to learn and grow in school regardless of their background, for my Father its to support the school communities and spread awareness of Variety’s cause and knowing how passionate I am to support my beliefs! This will first year on the Bash, and we will be documenting this journey inside the OOSH with a road map of our travels and updating everyone back home as the week progresses!” Steph, Ed Leader St Nicholas OOSH Rutherford
