What is play-based learning?

Play-based learning appears in many forms but is child-initiated and carer-led. It shadows the interests and needs of the child to form meaningful learning experiences embedded in curiosity and creativity.

Play-based learning can be seen in:

  • Imaginative play where children can follow make-believe scenarios with dress-up, imagined characters and props. It stimulates the child’s creativity and strengthens their growing vocabulary.
  • Sensory exploration with a range of resources like playdough, building blocks, natural materials, or varied textures like sand or water. This form of play explores fine motor skills and sensory processing.
  • Outdoor play enables children to run, throw a ball, complete an obstacle course and more. It provides children with the opportunity to expand gross motor skills, coordination, balance and social skills.
  • Games like age-appropriate puzzles, board games or something like “I spy” support children in developing their critical thinking skills, problem-solving skills and turn-taking skills.
  • Engaging in everyday routines with elements of cooking, gardening or tidying instils a sense of responsibility, encourages teamwork and builds children’s confidence.
  • Story time experiences where children can listen but also read aloud supports vocabulary and communication development. This can be expanded into reading not just books but labels, instructions and more to help children build their word libraries.
  • Music and movement stimulates hearing development and inspires creativity as children listen to music, sing along and play instruments.
  • Creative activities with various materials to paint, draw and craft engages children in building fine and gross motor skills whilst engaging their creative mind and encouraging problem-solving as their bring their ideas to life.
