Children’s Book Week shines a spotlight on Australian children’s literature and its ability to provide education, enjoyment, and enlightenment for readers. During 2025, communities are invited to join in the celebration of literature, drawing upon the adventurous side of storytelling with the theme ‘Book an Adventure’. This theme acknowledges the literacy techniques utilised by authors and illustrators to create stories that transport readers to new worlds, sparking imagination and nurturing curious minds.
To support families in nurturing their children’s love of reading, we’ve created a guide to creating a cosy reading nook. In creating a warm, inviting space where stories can come to life, families can share in the joy of literature by exploring new and classic literature adventures together.
Here is our guide:
Build a cosy reading nook
1. Find your spot
Choose a quiet, tucked away spot within your home. Perhaps a window seat, corner of a cosy room or even a shaded space outdoors. Look for a space that feels calm and inviting, with limited distractions.
2. Choose comfortable seating
A soft armchair, beanbag, floor cushions or even a small tent structure can define the space and make it feel special.
3. Layer with textures
Drape a soft throw blanket over your seat, add some decorative cushions for visual appeal and comfort and add a rug to create warmth and define the space. Together these additions add a touch of comfort and create visual appeal.
4. Consider your lighting
Natural light sources are ideal for reading, but you could also incorporate a soft reading lamp and fairy lights to create a gentle and calming ambiance.
5. Add a personal touch
Make the space feel uniquely yours by decorating with child’s artwork, favourite photos or small keepsakes. These items create a sense of ownership and comfort that is inviting for your child.
6. Don’t forget the essentials
Keep a small storage area in close reach to find and store plenty of reading options. You may also choose to include a notebook and drawing resources for your child to reflect and nurture their curious mind.
For longer reading times, provide a water bottle and small healthy snack plate to fuel your child as they embark on their literacy adventure.
