10 questions you can ask to check in on your coworkers

At St Nicholas, we believe in the power of connection and support among our staff members. To honour Mental Health Month, let’s focus on fostering a caring and inclusive environment by checking in on one another. Here are 10 questions you can ask your coworkers to show you care and to support their mental health.

1. “How are you, really?” Sometimes, a simple, sincere question can make all the difference. Take a moment to ask this and genuinely listen to the response.

2. “Is there anything I can do to help?” Offering assistance, whether big or small, can relieve some of the burden someone might be feeling. Your willingness to help can provide immense comfort.

3. “What are you looking forward to this week?” Encouraging positive thinking can shift focus away from stressors. It’s a great way to remind your coworkers about the good things in life.

4. “How are you taking care of yourself lately?” Discussing self-care practices can open the door to sharing coping mechanisms and inspire others to adopt healthier habits.

5. “Would you like to grab a coffee (or tea) and chat?” A casual conversation can provide a safe space for someone to talk openly. A change of scenery can sometimes make discussions feel less formal and more comfortable.

6. “What’s been bringing you joy lately?” Focusing on positive experiences can improve mood and overall well-being. Encourage your coworkers to share their joyful moments.

7. “Do you need a break?” Offering to cover someone’s duties for a short period can give them the chance to take a breather and recharge.

8. “Have you been sleeping well?” Sleep is crucial for mental health. If a coworker is struggling with sleep, they might need some advice or simply someone to talk to about their concerns.

9. “Is there anything you’d like to talk about?” Sometimes, people just need an invitation to share what’s on their mind. Being a good listener is one of the most compassionate things you can do for someone.

10. “Remember, you are not alone.” Remind your coworkers that there is a supportive community around them. Knowing that they are not facing challenges alone can provide immense comfort.

Remember, mental health is as important as physical health. By reaching out and showing kindness, we can create a workplace where everyone feels valued, supported and understood.

Let’s make this Mental Health Month a time of compassion, connection and care.
