Creating a love of reading at home

With a deep understanding of the myriad of benefits that reading offers, our St Nicholas Pedagogy Team has compiled a selection of resources and suggestions to serve as your guide in creating a rich and engaging literacy experience at home.

Echoing the sentiment of Children’s Book Week, St Nicholas’ Pedagogy Team believes that literacy learning is a lifelong journey that isn’t packed into a singular week.

This underpins the curation of these resources where it is intended that these suggestions are applied in incremental phases to suit the pace and available resourcing for your young learner.

Discover how to foster a love of reading, benefits and opportune learning moments whilst providing and sharing reading moments with your little learner.

*These resources and suggestions, are applicable to any child aged 0-5.

Ways to develop children’s love of reading

Storytelling can transport us to new realities and perspectives. Here are some suggestions for instilling and nurturing a love of reading:

  • Incorporate reading into your daily routine.
  • Provide easy open access to books.
  • Connect with your local library.
  • Immerse children in a literacy-rich environment, both indoors and outdoors.
  • Provide a comfortable, quiet place to read together.
  • Converse with children throughout the story with open-ended questions and descriptive language.
  • Aim to read at least three books per day (which equates to over 1000 a year)!
